Black Diamond Bipod Bivy Bag Review

Black Diamond Bipod Bivy Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For side sleepers like me, the Bi-Pod Bivy is way too tight in both the hip and shoulder areas. Also, I use the Therma-Rest NeoAir mattress which when fully inflated takes-up three inches in height.

I have reordered and have received the heavier but far more spacious Tri-Pod Bivy. Its size is just right for me.

The quality of both models is excellent.

I have two complaints with both models. First, the zip-up opening is much too small. The opening should have at least one more foot to facilitate entry into the bivy. Second, I don't understand why the outer seams don't come pre-sealed from the factory. Instead you are sent a tube of sealer and a syringe and must seal it yourself.

Product Description:
The Bibler Bipod Bivy is both functional and comfortable. A shock-corded Easton aluminum pole arches over the head and shoulder area to provide a roomy space so you won't feel claustrophobic. A large zippered entry on the Bipod Bivy provides easy access, great ventilation and rolls back to reveal a generously sized, no-see-um net door. You can check out the stars, feel a pleasant breeze on your face - without the local mosquito masquerade joining your party.

Marmot Alpinist Tent 2-Person 4-Season Review

Marmot Alpinist Tent 2-Person 4-Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This tent is extremely easy to setup (even in the pouring rain) and has served us well through all seasons. It has been warm and insulating in very cold temperatures (well below freezing) above 12,000 feet in CO.Although it is a two person tent, it is a little on the small side, but that helps with the minimal weight. Also, if you are looking for a tent with a large vestibule, this is not a tent for you.The vestibule has enough room for two large packs and shoes- that's it.The vents, places to attach biners and lights, and the colors are all nice touches. If your idea of backpacking is roughing it and going fast and light, this is the tent for you- it's just the perfect size and holds up in nasty weather.

Unfortunately while trying to set it up in a hail storm, I was rushing and bent a pole too much- breaking it and the shock cord inside. This sounds like the beginning of a bad review, but it comes with some nice extra pole pieces that we were able to rig so our trip could continue with a standing tent. After getting home and sending it away for free Marmot got a new pole back to us within 4 weeks.Marmot rocks!

Two features matter most in the mountains: strength, and low weight. The Marmot Alpinist 2-Person 4-Season Tent delivers both to alpine climbers and mountaineers. Though this single-wall Marmot tent weighs only 4lb 15oz, it's three-pole design holds tough against burly mountain storms. GoLite Shangri-La 2 Shelter Tent Review

GoLite Shangri-La 2 Shelter Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A great tent for the light weight backpacker. Pros - the tent is light and folds up small. The set up is a little tricky because you are dealing with stakes to hold the tent down. This is more of a rain fly than a tent. There is NO BOTTOM for this tent. They sell a separate bottom for this model or you can buy the bug-screen insert that fits perfectly inside this tent. You can use trekking-poles to hold it up the tent, however this sucks because once you go inside the tent in limits the amount of space you have and you are always fearful of knocking down one or both of the trekking-poles and down comes they tent with you in it. I like to use the corner loops and tie the tent to a tree using string or rope. This way you have more room and you can roll over in the night without worry of bringing down the house. What I don't like about the tent besides the trekking pole thing is you need to stake down the tent to have it work properly and you really need to be in a place that has some place to hang the tent. Another words this tent is not very useful if you are in a place that has a hard ground where stakes don't work and/or a place that has no trees to hang up the tent. One more thing, it really helps to buy a light weight tarp for this tent to sit on. My 6'-8" friend used this tent for five nights while hiking in the Sespe wilderness in 2010. It was the first time he had a back packing tent that actually fit him. This tent can easily and comfortably hold two people and two backpacks, or one giant person like SHAQ.

Product Description:
The innovative, ultra-lite GoLite Shangri-La 2 backcountry shelter delivers serious weather protection for 4-season use and unparalleled space-to-weight ratio with superb durability. It can be used by itself, with the Shangri-La 2 Floor, or with the Shangri-La 2 Nest inner bug tent (note that it doesn't come with a floor). Large enough for two sleepers, this ultra-lite dual-peak design can be pitched with your trekking poles, over paddles or ski poles, or hang it from branches via its top loops.
The reflective stake out loops keep you from tripping in the middle of the night and the hydrophilic thread at the seams expand when wet--sealing the seams and eliminating the need for liquid sealant. The Shangri-La 2 provides 49 square feet of protected interior space. Dual roof vents allow air to circulate and combat condensation build-up. Six Y-stakes, a stake sack, and tent stuff sack are included.
The ultra-lite waterproof SilLite fabric of the Shangri-La 2 sheds both rain and snow, making the Shangri-La 2 surprisingly weather-resistant. Silicone-elastomere fabrics allow their fibers to stretch without separating or breaking, and this makes them stronger than conventional PU-coated (or PU/siliconized) fabrics for a far lower weight. Silicone impregnation means that the silicone completely permeates the fibers and also makes the fabric hydrophobic, so it doesn't soak up water and gain weight.

    Usage: 3- to 4-season backpacking

Eureka Freedom Outfitter 11-Foot by 6.5-Foot Two-Person Tent Review

Eureka Freedom Outfitter 11-Foot by 6.5-Foot Two-Person Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my son a Eureka 4XT years ago when he was a Cub Scout & I was the Cubmaster. Now that he's in Boy Scouts, dads like me (I'm still an adult leader) have to use our own tents. However I've since landed in a wheelchair so this design really appealed to me.

Our Boy Scout Troop uses all Eureka Outfitter tents so the boys have no trouble assembling this for me if I need help. This is very important when we're too close for my chair to navigate between the tent plots as proved to be the case at West Point this year. The National Jambo will be even worse.

The fan door is awesome even for able bodies especially if the area is cramped. The door is more navigable than a staked flap which can create a tripping hazard.

Assembly is a little unusual at first but very sensible once you're used to it.

I encountered an extreme wind & rain event this year with no issues at all. This tent fared much better than the cheap mass merchant tents that so many parents buy.

Many people are shocked when they see me at a camping event in my custom off-road power-chair but this Eureka Freedom Outfitter makes it all possible in grand comfort & style.

This tapered rectangular dome tent sleeps two and has a self-supporting five-pole aluminum frame. The combination of pole pocket and continuous rod sleeves with post and grommet assembly allows set up from one side of tent or from a wheel chair. The combination side entry doors/windows in sleeping area are sized for side transfer of a person onto a cot. Pull handles on internal door and window zippers allow easy grasp and operation. It also features large windows for great views and excellent ventilation.

About Eureka
Though the exact year is unknown, Eureka's long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, New York, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products--most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for nineteenth century American frontiersmen--as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.
The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and during the 1940 and even fabricated and erected the IBM "tent cities" just outside Binghamton. The seven acres of tents housed thousands of IBM salesmen during the company's annual stockholders meeting, which had since outgrown its previous locale. In the 1940s, with the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.
In 1960, Eureka's new and innovative Draw-Tite tent, with its practical, free standing external frame, was used in a Himalayan Expedition to Nepal by world renowned Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person documented to summit Mt. Everest only six years earlier. In 1963, Eureka made history during its own Mt. Everest ascent, with more than 60 of its tents sheltering participants from fierce 60+ mph winds and temperatures reaching below -20°F during the first all American Mt. Everest Expedition.
For backpackers and families, Eureka introduced its legendary Timberline tent in the 1970s. Truly the first StormShield design, this completely self-supporting and lightweight backpacking tent became one of the most popular tents the entire industry with sales reaching over 1 million by its ten year anniversary.
Eureka tents have also traveled as part of several historic expeditions, including the American Women's Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna I in 1978 and the first Mt. Everest ascents by a Canadian and American woman in 1986 and 1988. In recent history, tents specially designed and donated by Eureka sheltered Eric Simonson and his team on two historic research expeditions to Mount Everest, this time in a quest for truth regarding the 1924 attempted summit of early English explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. During the 1999 expedition, the team made history finding the remains of George Mallory, but the complete mystery remained unsolved. Returning in 2001 to search for more clues, the team found amazing historical artifacts which are now on display at the Smithsonian.
Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Marmot Twilight 2P - 2 Person Tent (Fall 2010) Review

Marmot Twilight 2P - 2 Person Tent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son and I camp with this tent frequently and we like it very much. The floor size is very good and the large vestibules are an excellent feature. It is also very well ventilated with the fly up.

There are a few niggling things that I do not like about this tent. The gear loft or gear attic is not usable as-is. Because it hangs directly in the center of the tent, headroom is reduced by 6 to 8 inches. The attachment loops for the loft should be moved to the foot end of the tent, where it would be accessible but not intrude upon headroom.

The stays for the doors and fly openings are just plain goofy. Instead of a tapered plastic toggle, there's a section of cord with a cord-lock knotted onto the end. The cord-lock is very difficult to push through the opposite loop, to tie back the doors or the fly. They're doubly-hard to fumble with wearing gloves! After lengthy discussion with a floor salesman, our only guess is that the cord-locks are provided as "extra" gear replacements for some other Marmot gear. That's redundant - I don't need four extra cord-locks. At any rate, I replaced ours with toggles made from pieces of dowel rod.

The manufacturer needs to diagram out instructions for folding the fly. The plastic dowels that pop out the fly vents can tear through the fly when it is being folded and rolled up if they are not oriented correctly. Also, the fly needs to be folded such that the window stays flat and is not folded or creased back upon itself.

I like the storage pockets at the head of the tent, the appearance of the tent, and the layout. This tent shrugs off wind like nobody's business. There do not seem to be any stress points where the fabric is stretched especially tight, to cause premature wear.

This tent may be listed for backpacking, but at over five pounds, it's really not well-suited for that purpose unless you're breaking it up between two people. The fly is the heaviest single component.

Overall, quite content with the purchase. The details drag it down.

(More customer reviews)
I used this tent on a four month solo hiking trip from the Netherlands to Spain. The weather ranged from heavy rain to serious heat and I was using the tent (as opposed to a Gite or a Auberge) at least 60% of the time.

It was very easy to put up. I wasn't the most experienced camper in the world before this trip and the very first time I assembled the tent, it only took me 10 minutes. After I'd done it a few times, I could put it up in 5 minutes or less.

For one person, it was palatial, and when my partner was able to join me on weekends it was still comfortable for two with room left over to store the gear.

It never leaked, even on the rainiest and windiest nights, and the condensation was well within the bounds of reasonable.

Other hikers on the same route were jealous of how light it was, given how easy/large/comfortable it turned out to be. A really great compromise between weight and comfort-- I highly recommend it!

The Bibler Tempest is an ideal shelter for any wilderness traveler or mountaineer, built to outlast howling winds and torrential downpours while its contents ? you! ? stay dry & happy. With plenty of room for two, the Tempest's shape maximizes living space by uniting steep walls with a simple floor design. In fact, it stands nearly 4' tall (1.1m) at the peak. Equipped with two attached vestibules, you'll enjoy a 44sq. ft. floor area! This extra space is NOT at the expense of strength. Four Easton 7075-E9 poles bend naturally into the eaves of the tent and are locked into place with Twistlock Pole Ties, providing a strong, secure framework. Both vestibules are seam-taped and corner pockets are RF welded for maximum water protection. Best of all, every one of these features comes to you at a reasonable price compared to other tents of this caliber.

With this 2 man tent you don't need 2 tents: one for winter and one for the tropics.I was worried before I purchased about condensation on a single wall tent but it turns out this is no problem.Ventillation is excellent - summer or winter!I use it as a one man tent (it's light enough!) and it is sooo roomy and bright. When the weather is fine and warm just unzip both doors for a 6 billion star view.It is unlike any tent I have ever owned.Follow instructions for setting up and it is then easy. It's probably not up to full on winter gales when pitched in stupid places but for anything else it covers it all - and with style!

This tent has a very nice design, and is very light. It stands strong in moderate winds and rain. I would have rated it 4.5 stars if it wasn't for the seams that are not taped or factory sealed. For a tent in this price range I would have expected a tent ready to use out of the box.
I use it mostly in sea kayak trips, along with a Golite Hex 3.

The amazingly versatile Black Diamond Skylight 3-Person 3-Season Tent is equally at home in pouring west coast rain or sweltering desert heat. This tent so impressed the editors at Outside Magazine that they gave it the 2006 Gear of the Year Award. When the weather assures a tent-bound day, the EPIC canopy fabric fights off the water and provides excellent breathability. Stash your packs under the vestibule to keep them dry while you play cards inside. When the weather is so hot that you're afraid of melting, pull back the attached fly to expose the mesh half canopy of the Black Diamond Skylight Tent. This ability to drastically adjust ventilation makes the Skylight and excellent choice for nearly any weather short of winter storms.

I got this tent for my son and i to use with Cub Scouts. It has served us *very* well. We've used it in warm and cool weather. The tent is very cozy, my son loves to sit and read in it.

It's very warm, well constructed, sturdy, and easy to pitch and strike.I'm considering buying a second one.

Seedhouse Tent - 3 Person by Big Agnes Review

Seedhouse Tent - 3 Person by Big Agnes

We love this tent. In fact, after our little family of three grew to a family of 5, we opted just to buy another one just like it rather than buy a 6 man tent. Our little ones are ecstatic about having their own tent. It is easy to set up, and packs very small for backpacking and storage. Can't say enough good things about it.

After hearing nothing about the tent order for 19 days I emailed the seller and did not hear back, however, when I rated them for their lack of response, they responded very quickly.I never heard anything from Fedex or the seller, like Melissa suggests.I ordered the tent on April 23rd and did not have it May 15, 2009. Sorry to say I cannot rate the tent, just the lack of service and rude emails from the seller. The seller's second email was venomous. Melissa wrote at the review site that my feedback was "ridiculous".I didn't know that shopping would end up in insults toward me. Melissa's first response is next:

Hi Penny -- Why not give us time to respond before leaving such rude feedback?

Your tent was returned to us by Fedex as refused by recipient.I am assuming they tried to deliver it to a wrong address. Our apologies.

I am issuing you a full refund because you have already left us bad feedback and when that happens, the transaction is considered closed.

If you will kindly consider removing the feedback, it would be very appreciated.

Regards,

Melissa

Trek Tents 6-person 12 x 10' Geo Dome Tent with Vestibule Green / Gray Review

This tent is a great deal.We have had ours for over eight years and used it regularly. It has only been within the past couple of years that the seams started to rip and a pole broke. It has survived parties, weather, children, pets. We put a queen and twin air mattress side by side with some room to spare at the bottom and top of mattresses for gear. The gear room is FABULOUS for shoes, coats and other dirty items best left outside. We even put a porto-potty in this space. It is tall inside with a place to hang a lantern or fan from the ceiling. There are two doors with plenty of screen for venitlation. It stays warm inside on cool nights but can warm up quickly in the day due to the dark green color. I am bummed to be searching for a new tent but older children require more privacy and space. This was a great tent for their younger years.
